Suicide: a : the act or an instance of taking one’s own life voluntarily and intentionally especially by a person of years of discretion and of sound mind.
In Minnesota suicide is the second leading cause of death in teens and young adults. Suicide is greatly influenced by someones mental state. Depression, Anxiety, Anorexia are only a couple of the leading reasons. To deal with a mental illness can be very hard. Many people often treat mental illnesses like you have a choice to have them. But you don’t, and this makes suicide probably one of the hardest things to comprehend unless you are struggling with it yourself. Suicide prevention eventually comes down to how one is treated, and trying to make sure that they know they are valued.
This topic was chosen because suicide indirectly and directly effects everyone in a multitude of ways. Suicide has affected me many times and it is not an easy thing to deal with. Every life is valuable and its so sad how not everyone can see that. Hopefully with choosing this topic we can draw more attention and get people involved in helping others.
Questions being researched:
What can we as people do to try to decrease the suicide rates and the statistics?
How is our community involving itself to help prevent teen suicide?
Is suicide really a selfish act? Or one made out of desperation?
